Barry – Writing His Own Story

Mediline are proud of the artistic work of Barry.

Defining himself as a writer, actor and artist, Barry produces bold, text based visual art he calls ‘WRRIGHHTINNGSERRSS’.  He uses repetitive letters to elongate his words, which can become scripts, personal messages and his hopes for the future.

In 2018 Barry became the first learning disabled artist to have a piece acquired by The Whitworth for their main fine art collection. The piece, ‘YES I WANNT TO DO TRRICKSSERRSS’ (image below) has been exhibited at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Manchester Contemporary Art Fair and The Lowry, as well as The Whitworth.

In September 2024 Barry won an Award for Visual Artists from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and received a staggering £75,000 prize!  Barry received his award at a ceremony held on 14th November at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, London where he enjoyed a few days sightseeing too.

On the 10th December 2024 Barry was on ITV’s Granada Reports when Tim Scott from ITV visited the Venture Arts stand at Manchester Contemporary in November and then came to the studio to interview Barry and two other artists.

“II LIKE DOINNG WRRIGHHTINNG ANND DRRAWINNG.  HAVE A ACTTING PAID JOB ONN TELEVISSION TO DO LOTSS OFF TRRICKSSERRSS JUMMPONN TELLEVISSION PICTTURRESSERRSS TO LOTSS OFF GOOD MONNEY TO SPENND ANND BUY.” Barry Anthony Finan.

Well done Barry – everyone is so proud of you and your achievements!
