John is supported by Mediline both at home and in accessing his local community. While he uses a wheelchair when out and about, this has never stopped him from staying active and involved in the things he enjoys.
One of John’s favourite pastimes is visiting his local Mecca Bingo, where he is well known by staff and enjoys being part of the community there.
When the bingo hall went a refurbishment, John was invited to share his experiences as a wheelchair user. With support from his team, he attended meetings with management and confidently explained that the existing tables were too high, making it difficult for wheelchair users to participate comfortably.
This feedback led to real change. As part of the refurbishment, lower tables were installed to improve accessibility. Following the reopening, senior management visited the venue and spoke directly with John about his experience. His input helped to influence accessibility improvements across other Mecca Bingo venues, a lasting impact beyond his local community.
John has also made a difference closer to home. Accessing his property had become increasingly difficult due to overgrown trees and bushes along a narrow pathway, forcing him into the road. After learning about a local MP surgery, John attended with support and raised his concerns directly.
In both situations, John’s support team played a key role, not by speaking for him, but by enabling him to speak for himself. Through the right support, John has been able to raise issues that matter to him, influence change, and see real improvements in his everyday life. John’s story is a powerful example of active citizenship, showing how people can be supported to have a voice, shape their communities, and create meaningful change.
